Enjoy the Labor Day Holiday!

Starting next week, students will be in the full swing of 5th grade. Here are some updates...

Reading: We will introduce the students to the Reading series and all it has to offer. We're planning on taking is slow to be sure all students will have plenty of time to read aloud, work independently as well as cooperatively, and reap the benefits of a more intense program.
*Read and review the story we're working on nightly
*Practice how to say the vocabulary words and their definitions
*Ask questions to refresh key points of the story

Spelling: Students will get a spelling list on Wednesday. It is very important these words are reviewed at home. Students will can use a computer game at home to make it a little more fun.
Expect a test every 4-5 days.

Social Studies: We will begin the unit on Ancient Indians of the Western Hemisphere which will lead us into our first project. Students will need a bar of soap by Friday, September 10th. Please check your child's notebook and folder for more information.

English: Students are working on rough drafts of a persuasive writing. We have discussed the techniques of persuasion, and students are expected to incorporate any of them into their article. Please discuss your child's topic and his/her opinions on the subject matter.

Spelling: Due to the weather, we are not getting a new list this week. The test will be on Tuesday, February 17th for the previous week's list. Students have been warned since last week to expect the test other than on Friday.

A written response will be assigned on Wednesday. This week's story deals with issues of the Holocaust. I would expect some questions coming home. Students in fifth grade sometimes have a hard time understanding this sensitive subject matter.

Spelling: there will not be a new list this week. Spelling Bee information and word list has been issued. We will have two practice runs and the final "bee-off" on Friday, December 18th.

ENGLISH: We are wrapping up on lessons from last week and reading through our novels. I would like to have all class periods finish their novels by next week, so that our last novel will be for pleasure only, and not have the pressure of A.R. points looming over us.
Since April is National Poetry Month, students have been listening to different styles of poetry and creating some of their own poems as well.
We will be entering a few contests this month also. Scholastic book clubs is sponsoring a "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" comic strip contest, Major Kane is having a Mother's Day essay contest, and Community Banks is having a coal/mining poster contest coming up.

PSSA: As we complete the novels, students will have to do a book report.

ENGLISH: We read all three Shakespeare plays. Students had to choose their favorite play and make a movie poster. I am really impressed by their art work and creativity. We will get back to Unit 6, Pronouns throughout the week. April is "National Poetry Month" and I will start to introduce students to poetry of all kinds and hope they will develop an appreciation for it.

PSSA: All testing has been completed. I am very proud of the hard work and effort put out by all the students! There are still some writings I would like to finish so although the test is done, we still have some work to do.

ENGLISH: We have completed reading/acting the three Shakepeare plays, Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, and Midsummer Night's Dream. The students really enjoyed speaking and understanding Shakespeare's language. Many have discovered that modern movies and television shows reflect or repeat the same storylines from so long ago. Their assignment is to choose which play is their favorite and create a movie poster for it. The poster must include the title, a picture, critiques, and be in color. It is due March 18th.

PSSA: This week we will be focusing on how to answer the open ended math questions. We will complete some activities that will practice probability and statistics. Testing dates are March 17th through the 27th.

ENGLISH: We finished reading the play, A Midsummer Night's Sleepover, a take on the Shakespeare original. The students are really enjoying the discussion and introduction to the life and times of this famous poet/playwright. I also introduced the classes to some of the artists that influenced Shakespeare and the rest of the world. It was interesting to see how many students actually recognized some of these masterpieces! This week we will explore the language and phrases that Shakespeare made popular. Students will also have the opportunity to do some acting themselves.

PSSA: Reading and Math testing dates are March 16th through March 27th

ENGLISH: This week we practiced when to use commas beyond words in a series. We also finished the lesson on Interjections. The students enjoyed viewing the School House Rock version. Do not be surprised if you hear the "tune" at home. It's very catchy! Using quotations and dialogue are up next. Be on the look out for a worksheet that will require students to use photographs or magazine clippings to complete the assignment.

PSSA: We are continuing to read and discuss each period's novels. Please continue to ask about story elements such as characters, setting, plot, and events. PSSA Test is soon approaching. We will begin a new writing assignment shortly and continue to work with the Buckle Down books.

ENGLISH: We will begin practicing present, past, and future verb tenses this week. Quizzes on action, helping, and linking verbs have been posted. Please continue to check on-line for current grades. We have also started reading our new novels together. Each class period voted on which story to do next. Every student of the "red team" should have completed their Accelerated Reader tests for The Pinballs.

PSSA: We completed a lesson in the Buckle Down Reading workbook which focused on test taking skills for reading and writing. We have also done an activity using onomatopoeia, where readers "hear" something the writers are describing (ex. the teakettle hissed as the water boiled).

ENGLISH: quiz from possessive nouns graded and posted. We will begin the next unit on verbs.

PSSA: descriptive paragraphs have been edited and published. Rubric sheets will be sent home to make you aware of the grade. The writing sample itself will not be sent home. I am compiling folders to keep all writings throughout the year. PSSA class is a pass/fail grade and is dependent on class participation and completion of in-class assignments and activities.

REMINDERS:
-Continue to check your child's homework books for daily assignments in all subject areas.
-Progress reports coming home this week.
-October book orders will be coming home shortly and due the 17th

ENGLISH: Quiz on common/proper nouns and plurals, graded and posted on e-school book. Upcoming lessons will focus on possessives-singular vs. plural.

PSSA: We completed our rough draft for a descriptive paragraph. Students are describing their favorite Halloween costume.

*Field trip information will be coming home shortly.

**The first Scholastic Book order has been distributed. Another order has been sent and is expected to be delivered later this week.

ENGLISH: Subject/Predicate practice. Worksheets throughout the week may be graded.

PSSA: We will begin writing a descriptive paragraph. Students will review the writing process and continue to edit his/her own work to correct grammatical errors.

*September book orders should be coming in sometime this week. I am still accepting orders until this Friday, if interested.

English: continuing with lessons on subjects/predicates and conjuctions. Students will practice in textbook and workbook along with other partner activities. We are already half way through the novel, The Pinballs. Please continue to discuss the story's events so far.

PSSA: to correlate with the Unit 1 Math lessons, students will complete lessons on place value, comparing and ordering numbers, decimals, and negative numbers.

*to celebrate the anniversary of September 11, 2001, students will discuss and journal on why he or she is proud to be an American.

** Book Fair shopping on Tuesday, September 9th for all English/PSSA sections at the start of each class.

* We have begun reading the novel, The Pinballs by Betsy Byars. Please discuss what we have read so far. The students seem very interested in this coming of age story.

* We have also started Lesson 1 in the English text. Students are to bring a photo, magazine picture or image from a computer to use for an in-class activity on Thursday, September 4th. All pictures will be returned.

* During PSSA class, we have completed some brain builder/mind bender problem solving activities. Most assignments will be completed during class time. It will be rare for homework to be completed outside of school for this subject area.

* * Please be sure to check your child's homework assignment book daily. All other necessary information or updates on assignments will be posted there.

* * Book orders are due Friday, September 19th. Orders may be sent in any time prior to that date. Thank you.
